Fields, Finches and Slugs

Autumn brings with it a new feature of the fields: bales of straw start to appear after crops are harvested.  These can be either cubic in shape, or, as here, the familiar cotton reels.

This particular field is on the outskirts of the village of Campsea Ashe, seen in the background.
The National Grid is never too far away.
Sweetcorn is often grown to provide shelter for game birds such as pheasant, but this crop at Friday Street Farm is probably to be harvested.
The café and farm store at Friday Street are favourite haunts on weekends and summer holidays.

Sadly no time to focus on the greenfinch on our bird feeder.

Begonias carry on blooming right up to the first frosts and even beyond, in a sheltered position.  What caught my eye here was the peculiar dotted slug or snail trail on the pathway.
